SFA 052 – Mistakes We’ve Made as Authors/Publishers/Marketers

For this week’s show, we decided to share some of the mistakes we’ve made as authors, publishers, and marketers (yes, when you are self-publishing, you are all of those things!). Our hope is that sharing these will help you avoid them.

Back on Episode 20, we discussed some of our early mistakes, but we drummed up some new ones for this show. Some were from the past few years and some were from just this year.

Among other things, Jo talked about how his urban fantasy launch last year didn’t go as well as he’d hoped and some of the reasons that might be the case. Lindsay talked about a series of novellas she did where the installments weren’t long enough to charge $2.99 (and get the 70% split on). And Andrea talked about a propensity for biting off more than she can chew, and saying yes to projects that weren’t worth the time or money.

We also talked about spending too much for covers, waiting too long to hire an assistant, and misplaced focus vs. becoming too hyper-focused.

If you enjoy the show, let us know. We have plenty of mistakes we can dredge up to talk about, in the hope that they are good learning experiences for others.
