SFA 101 – Answering Your Book Advertising Questions

As a follow-up to Episode 98 (Do Authors Need to Advertise and Where and How Much Should They Spend?), we did our best to answer some of the questions on advertising that our listeners asked in the Six Figure Authors Facebook group.

As we got rolling on the show, we realized that advertising–especially talk of optimizing ads, finding targets, bidding on clicks, etc.–was a pretty technical subject for an audio podcast. We hope you’ll get something out of it, but if you’re feeling overwhelmed, it was probably us, not you! This is why people pay the big money for really good courses!

Resources that Lindsay mentioned at the beginning:

Questions we answered:

  • Skye: I’m new and know zero about ads. Can you go over the basics of how it works in the beginning of the episode so I’m not totally lost? I see people say they run $5 a day ads etc, but I’m not sure how that correlates to click prices.
  • Holly: Would love to know how you guys assess and optimize ads.
  • Holly: Would also love to know what kinds of targeting work for you.
  • Stacy: How do you find fresh audiences?
  • D.M.: How do you know when it’s time to add a new advertising platform? Advertising is overwhelming, so I have focused on learning one platform at a time. But is there a point when you must add a second platform to keep sales going on a series? Can you reach saturation of your potential reader base if you advertise the same book on the same platform for extended periods of time?
  • Amy: How the heck to find Facebook audiences for fantasy? I gave up on that pretty quickly because figuring out the audiences was the hardest part (and the targeting is not as easy as say, Amazon.) And… Melanie: same question but for sci-fi.
  • D.L. Martone: Are there any services that you know of that will handle your ads? And are any of you using them?

If you’re interested in Andrea’s new book, Killer Subject Lines: How to Grab Readers’ Attention and Get Your Emails Opened, you can pick that up on Amazon. You can also check out her other books for authors:

Thanks for listening, and thank you to Joshua Pearson for producing the show!
